Distant Fires

2978
‘Where’s Betsy?’ Buckley asked. Cousin Enver, who had been propping up the bar since the wake began looked up and around at the the mourners who where commiserating around the buffet table. He turned back to Buckley. ‘Dunno. She was ‘ere a minute ago.’ ‘She must’ve gone out to get some air.’ Buckley said, more to himself than to Enver. ‘Y’all want me to go find her?’ Enver offered. ‘No.’ Buckley replied, a little more forcefully than he intended. Enver frowned at this. ‘Surely you aint’ worryin’ ‘bout me whiskin’ her away to a life of crime are ya?’ ‘Of course not.’ Buckley lied. ‘Ah just think she’ll want to be with her brother at a time like this.’ ‘Aye. Maybe yer right.’ Enver said with a sceptical smirk.

Besty was sitting on a chair outside the function hall staring into space sadly. She came to when Buckley called her name. ‘There ya are!’ Buckley said. ‘Why’d ya run off for?’ ‘Ah could only take so many condolences.’ Betsy said with a weak smile. Buckley sighed and sat on the chair next to her. ‘Ah know the feelin’ Y’all just gotta learn to smile and say ‘thank you’ without punching ‘em out.’ Buckley said with a sad grin. ‘No easy task.’ Betsy said with a sad grin of her own. ‘Cousin Enver talk to you ‘bout that thing?’ Buckley frowned. ‘Yup.’ He said, trying to keep his voice non committal. Enver had been dropping hints that Betsy should come out to San Palomino and get away from everything. Buckley was not a fan of the idea, in spite of Enver’s insistence that his life of crime was behind him. Seeing the look on his face, Betsy said: ‘Ah aint said yes yet. Ah told him Ah’d think on it.’ ‘Well, think on it real long, Betsy. ‘Cause ah got a bad feeling about him. Ah know he’s changed his ways but Ah still have visions of Valeian gangsters kicking in his door and shootin’ him and you fulla holes.’ Betsy rolled her eyes. ‘Like Ah said, Ah aint said yes yet.’ Buckley smiled sadly. ‘Y’all know what’d Ma and Pa would say if they were here.’ Betsy turned her eyes to the floor. ‘They’re not though.’ Buckley placed a hand on Betsy’s shoulder. ‘Ah know, Betsy. Ah know.’

I'm Leaving.

I have an announcement to make: It is with a heavy heart that I say that I have decided to stop updating this blog. No don't get me wrong I have enjoyed sharing my art with you and I hope that it has inspired you to create your own works but some things have come up in my real life that make updating an art blog rather difficult.

I should stop beating about the bush and just say it: I have undergone a conversion and am now a member of the Church of Scientology. To that end I have been assigned missionary work in Haiti for the foreseeable future, hence why I am not going to be updating the blog anymore. I know there are going to be a lot of people that are upset but I just ask to respect my decision.

Take care.
